He called on all citizens to work together to improve and maintain food security on the island. Mr. Melville was speaking at the opening of the World Food Day Exhibit at the Dwight Yorke Stadium on Wednesday. the activities commemorating World Food day began with an official ceremony at the Dwight Yorke stadium.
Representative of the Tobago Agriculture Society, Lindsay Edwards said we are celebrating world food day against a back drop of spiraling food prices, scarce food production, and an increase in incidences of praedial larceny.He pointed out that greater production is needed, even against the backdrop of decreasing lands space brought on by the explosion of house construction.
Secretary for the Division of Agriculture, Gary Melville stated that World Food Day is about bringing to the fore our responses, as citizens to ensure that individuals have access to sufficient quantities of nutritious food. He said millions are hungry around the world. He said this year’s theme, Food Prices from crisis to stability is very important.
Mr. Melville stressed that it is critical that we maintain a level of food security. He said to ensure success, the THA and all citizens must be on board with the theme of food security.
